I help innovative founders apply Steve Jobs' principles the right way, so i read this post with great interest. Your point about building for one ideal customer is precisely what Jobs did -- he built for his own 'think different' psychographic, for those who wanted aesthetic control over technology. This "niche" is the golden thread that connects every demographic on the planet. This is outcome-based planning and building, starting with the ultimate outcome, which is how customers want to feel. Emotion drives behavior 100% of the time. So target the emotion, then back into which products, services, features (processes, technologies, etc.) actually deliver on that emotion. Love data, AND it data needs to be used in harmony with qualitative human insights for its power to be fully unleashed. My 2 cents :-)
